This is a safety issue! In the engine switch, we found it was indeed due to the secondary chain on my 2013 N20 Engine (X3). My car has about 60k miles but went into service on June 29, 2012 so is outside the 7 year/70,000 mile warranty by 2 months. Thank you. They said they extended ro warranty to 70,000 miles but owners werent notified by the timing chain failure. The dealership was also kind enough to email me 1 week after this happened to sell me a new BMW. BMW has actually extended the timing chain warranty to 7 years/70k miles on the N20 engines, so if you’re still within those limits, it should be a covered warranty repair (even if they don’t like it). 2013 bmw 528i bought it 2nd hand about 60 days ago with 70,000 miles.
